Marleen Teugels 

Studies:

Master in Germanic Philology, Catholic University of Brussels and Catholic University of Louvain (Minor: Modern English Feminist Literature) (1979-1984)

Journalistic experience:

Special focus on discrimination of old people and ageing: as an Assistant to the editor-in-chief with Notre Temps-Onze Tijd (1994-1995). As an independent investigative reporter, writing many articles on the problematic situation of old people in nursery homes and the granny boom coming up very soon in magazines (Knack Magazine, Weliswaar). 

Special focus on discrimination of so-called minority groups (women, handicapped people, sick people, poor people, kids, soldiers,…) and general welfare topics as an independent investigative reporter for magazines (Knack) and newspapers (De Morgen, De Standaard, Het Parool, Weliswaar). Publication of many articles on gender issues.

Health topics (e.g. cancer) and investigation of the relationship between toxicity (warfare, pollution, crashes) and illnesses: Gulf War Syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome,… in several articles in Knack magazine and the book With Muffled Drums.

Research of the link between the toxicity of the battle field (including low levels of chemical gasses, Depleted Uranium, medical treatments of soldiers to protect them against the impact of chemical and biological weapons, use of insecticides and pesticides) The project was sponsored by the Pascal Decroos Fund for Special Journalism.

Consultancy:

Giving advise to the Dutch Council of Women (Nederlandstalige Vrouwenraad): brainstorming, initiation of initiatives.

Head of the press jury of the Marie Popelin Price 2000, celebrating a person that has distinguished herself in the women’s lib movement.

Participation at several television programmes (e.g. Faire le Point, Barend & van Dorp)

Various lectures on investigative journalistic practices.

Other:

Account Supervisor with several top advertising agencies, e.g. Garbarski-Euro-RSCG, responsible for the analysis of markets, the development of strategic positioning of brands and communicational strategies (1984-1992)

Communication Manager with the ‘National Council of Lawyers of Belgium’ developing and implementing a communication strategy and action plan (1992-1994)
